Concrete scars is a bit of a mix, but the over-all theme for most of the songs is about experiences that leave scars, or that you have difficulties getting over. That’s what’s going in Hunting elephants where our friend can’t get over a worn-down relationship, in Ways to leave where you’re fantasizing about better ways to have ended it, and in Green yard grass where she is lying on the floor while the truck’s pulling out with his stuff. There’s a bit of the same thing in As long as you let it, which is about being stuck on the old partner, clinging to tiny details and hoping, even though the person in question has already made it clear that things are over. Then we have Simple, crowded rooms which is about those small, nice moments when a stranger smiles at you. In this case it just happens to be a beautiful woman. Ugly is a mixture of something nice – the girlfriend – and something ugly – nasty old Hollerich which is a part of Luxembourg. Eastern forest is about Bornholm, I guess, and Chateau d’If is from the Count of Monte Cristo before I started the musical.
